Senior Project Update

1. I am currently teaching the waltz, we are about 1 minute into the song.

2. Recently I read an article about the way one practices. Lets say for example if I practice and when I mess up I keep going I will probably perform better because I have experienced this before. Where as some one who messes up during a practice starts over will have higher chances of choking if they mess up in a live performance.

3.  These are the formations I recently came up with, these are based off height and how well they can follow the people around them. The couple under the crown is to symbolize the main couple.

Blog 5b: Science Fair Proposal

1. Dance performance

2. To help your body perform its best, stretching will not only improve your flexibility and the ease at which you can move, but it will also help prevent injuries. Consider stretching as an element that is equally important as training for strength, balance and power.Citation: "Exercises to Stretch before Dancing." รข€” Dance Lessons, Learning, Entertainment, Lifestyle, Fashion, Wellness, Shopping, Supplies. N.p., n.d. Web. 10 Nov. 2012.

3.
If a dancer streches with a certain series of streches, then they will kick higher than if they used a typical stretching method.

4. I plan to stretch 22 girls out. The first day we will all do the same stretches and I will measure the height of the kick. The second week every girl will be assigned one type of stretch and a period of time of stretching. I will then measure the height of the kick after those stretches.  I will do that for 2 more weeks and  after collecting the data I will see which stretch helped most improve.

Working EQ and Possible Answers

(1) What cause a choreographed performance to be overwhelming?
(2) Yes, I added "the audience" to the ending.
(3) How the dancer practices, if the dancer has good musicality, the dancers technique.

Song Choice

[For my Independent Component 1 I am going to teach a quinceanera waltz]
This is the song chosen by the quinnceanera. It is 1/2 waltz and 1/2 cha cha. I think I will cut about 30 seconds from the song.

Independent Component 1 Plan Approval

1. I plan to choreograph my cousin's quinceanera waltz. The waltz will be about 4 minutes long. There are 12   people in the dance.

2. We will have practice twice a week for about 4 hours each in a 2 and a half month period of time.

3. My study relates to my component because I have been studying dance and what a dancer should do to prepare for a good performance, so now I will actually prepare dancers to put on a good performance using some of the knowledge I have gained these passed months.

Working EQ

The Pentagon:
(1) Positive Statement: I have become a better dancer though service learning.

(2) EQ Content: A part of my research would be when I learned that the body language in motions, facial expression and eyes are a giveaway on the dancer's emotions. That allowed me to understand on where dancers should focus on when preparing.

(3) Worked for me: I think the service learning has taught me the most and gives me an idea to how dancers are prepared for performances.

(4) Hasn't worked: Research has told me what I already learned during service learning. I think I need to open up my topic a little more.

(5a) How could I gather information on the audiences opinion to prove my statements correct? Are the things that make an overwhelming dancer natural talent or can they be learned?

(5b) I want to be a stand out dancer and learn my body and how far I can push the limits more.

(5c) I would like to talk to a choreographer that is now mainly a judge so she can give me the in tell on what she looks for in a performance.

Problem Statement

1. Dance Performance

2. Too many injuries caused from not a proper warm-up, once I solve this I will teach the proper warm-up and stretches to girls in the studio I work at.

3. Dancer forgets routine while performing. To solve this, I would figure out a away that I could teach a dance and repeat it enough to get muscle memory so a dancer is able to perform and let the music flow through.

Blog 3: Interview Preperation

1.  Who do you plan to interview?  Why?
I plan to interview my summer mentor because she has a great deal of experience with performances in front of a seated audience, a parade and competitions.

2.  You have to ask 5 questions.  What additional questions do you plan to ask?  Ask open-ended questions.
What is the most important thing, in your opinion, during a dance performance?
How can a dancer improve her/his presentation skills?
Tell me about what you think stands out during a performance

Blog 2: Dance Performance

a. My topic is dance performance and what it takes to make a good one and leave the audience in awe. I chose this because last year I joined iPoly's dance team and really payed attention to the little details that make a well routine. I had the skill but not the details. Seeing as how dance has always been a big part of my life, I couldn't believe I overlooked this.
b.

  • iPoly Citizen:  I plan to help other girls in the dance team with what I've learned from my mentorship. I don;t have to limit this to dance team, I can help my peers with in class presentations by explaining to them that little details can make a big difference.
  • Effective Communicator:  I plan to uses different methods of communicating and trying to get my point across, especially in presentation.
  • Effective Learner: I plan to use my creativity to the fullest and not limit myself. A dance has costume, music, and choreography to make a good routine. But when she/he uses body language and facial expression it pleases an audience. I want to give this project my all as I would at a performance.
  • Effective User of Technology: I plan to go out of the box with power points such as using music like a dancer and such.

Blog 1: Summer Mentorship Component

Mentor:
Contact: Ms. Karen (909) 476-5757
Hours: 10

Experience:
  • Questions:
What are better methods to teach the younger kids a routine?
For them to perform with a smile would it be better if they also practice with a smile?
What are ways to get a synchronized performance?
What does it take to get an astonishing dance performance?
How can one make up for a mistake during a performance?
  • What I gained:

I learned different techniques to teach different dances to a variety of age groups. I learned that while
almost every dance requires a different costume, different facial expression, and different body language
they all have things in common. No dancer will look well if she/he is not confident or prepared. For an
an audience to be overwhelmed, a dancer needs to be confident and lose themselves in the performance
as well (metaphorically speaking of course.)

  • The Chosen Topic
I knew from the beginning that dance was what I wanted to do. But I wasn't always sure if it was what I
should do. But going to service learning has been so much fun and I learn something knew every time.
I basically knew but service learning was that push I needed for me to make it happen.
